Flood Relief

Due to unprecendented scale of flood in Bihar, millions of people were displaced and needed relief. Since our reach is in Bhagalpur district, we did relief work in Naugachiya Subdivison of Bhagalpur. More than 15 lakh people had been affected in four blocks. The reason for choosing the location for flood relief was because of our reach & access there and our belief that we could do the work effeciently because of those factors. Our relief work was sporadic initially but later it gathered steam as CARE TODAY approved Rs.500,000 for running a relief camp. This camp accomodated 1000 people on a daily basis and provided food and medicines to them. We prepared 10000 packets of food for distribution.

Impact Assessment

The strategy of relief material distribution was staggered one. The relief materials were distributed in phases and in different villages. If some other organisation or group was distributing relief material in one village, no distribution was done in that village on that day. We were aware of other people and groups providing relief materials to the flood affected people.

Details of Distribution:

Item Name Quantity in Quintals
RICE 135
PULSE 26.5
POTATO 60.5
SALT 3
BLEACHING POWDER 4.5
FUELWOOD 10
GUR 4
DAALMOTH 4
PLASTIC BAG (5kg) in No. 600
MATCHBOX in No. 600
KHICHDI distribution 5000 people
Clothes 1000
Biscuit 1000

A total of 2000 family and 11000 individuals benefitted from the distribution of above quantity of food materials. The affected families were able to get food materials which enabled them to tide over a period of 10 days. Local organisation and people directed their relief materials and contribution through us. We distributed more than 2000 pieces of clothes and biscuits given by local people. There were indirect benefits like other group also focused their effort in these villages. There were short term employments to people affected by flood by helping in distribution of food materials.

Most importantly, it gave hope to people who were losing hope and till date we remain indebted to CARE TODAY and other individuals who extended their support.
